What beautiful weather we are getting, a day for the beach! This photo was taken in Salthill, Galway, in 1929. It was taken by Cloonakilleg woman Catherine Turley, who was home from the US on holiday. She brought her parents to Galway for the day as a treat and took this wonderful photo when they were in Salthill. The two ladies smiling at the camera in the centre of the photo are not connected to the Turleys, they are local women, probably from the Claddagh, which is not too far away from here. A fantastic photo of a very different Ireland. (special thanks to Elizabeth Moloney for this photo)

There was once something in Ireland people feared called féar gortach — “the hungry grass.”

According to Irish folklore, certain patches of grass carried a strange affliction. A person walking across them could suddenly be struck with overwhelming hunger, weakness, dizziness, or exhaustion.

The belief was often associated with places touched by suffering — lonely roads, old pathways, burial grounds, or locations connected in folk memory with famine and hardship. Some believed the land itself remembered tragedy.

People were said to carry a piece of bread in their pocket as protection. If hungry grass struck, eating immediately was believed to break its power.

Was it superstition? A warning passed through generations? Or folklore preserving memories of darker times in Ireland’s past?

Stories of the hungry grass were recorded in different parts of Ireland for centuries.

The 174 steps that lead down (...and back up!) to Donegal’s Malin Beg 😓

Also known as ‘Silver Strand’ (and yes, there are plenty of beaches in Ireland with that name), this is one of the more impressive stops along the Wild Atlantic Way 😍

If you or someone you’re with has limited mobility, you can still take in the horseshoe-shaped cliffs from above, right by the car park 🚗
