Effective December 9, 2024, the updated J-1 Skills List removes the two-year home residence requirement for J-1 visa holders from 34 countries, including China, India, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. This update means that many exchange visitors (see special note for physicians below) who were previously subject to the two-year foreign residence requirement solely due to the skills list will no longer need to return to their home country for two years (or request a waiver) before applying for certain U.S. visas or permanent residency.

Note for Physicians: The two-year home residence requirement for J-1 physicians who came to the United States in J-1 status to pursue GME training is governed by a different subsection of the statute. Physicians who obtained GME training in J-1 status will still need to get a waiver of their two-year home residence requirement, so please do not make any changes to your J-1 waiver jobs or contracts based on this recent skills list update.
