Another public service announcement to all my United States Citizen and otherwise legally in the US friends. My only purpose in this post is to make your life easier not to protect the constitution or make a point.
I have to do this because some of you are very empowered and are willing to be a jerk to federal agents. That might sound great in the bar or the health club sauna where I’ve heard this plan but in the real world, respect gets respct.
With your phone take a photo of your birth certificate, US passport, work, visa or other evidence that you are legally in the United States on your phone.
If you are stopped by ICE. Be polite. You have the right to remain silent, you don’t have the right to be an absolute jerk.
For those of you who followed my instructions, you will show them your proof of legal presence in the United States and be done with the situation. Then you can explain to everyone how wrong this is in your opinion.
However, if you get stopped with your children and undocumented nanny in the car with you. Your best option is to be super polite. Show them your proof of citizenship and explain that the other persons might be at home and you’ll be happy if they issue her an NTA to show that information at an ICE office on the date and time on the NTA.
Yes, that is the magic language NTA It stands for Notice to Appear.
The ICE agents likely don’t want to go through the hassle of issuing the NTA especially after they confirmed that the driver is a US citizen and actually knows her rights. It is most likely they’re going to let you and your undocumented nanny go on your way.
If one is issued, call me to discuss there are options.
If you decide to be an absolute jerk…. You can make the situation much worse.
