Today we celebrate being free-ish since 1965! Juneteenth is a holiday that has been celebrated as the true emancipation of slavery here in the U.S. Due to resistance and slow communication of the Emancipation Proclamation to the enslaved of Galveston, TX, they were not aware they had been free since January 1, 1863. The news was give officially on June 19, 1865, and has been celebrated in Texas and officially a national holiday in 2021.
