Two assistant baseball coaches and the Director of Baseball Operations at Northwestern University filed a lawsuit Monday, Aug. 14, 2023 against the school, its former head baseball coach, and various members of its administration. Their attorney, Christopher J. Esbrook, said they’re suing the school for negligence because it allowed the head coach to create such a toxic environment and mishandled the HR complaint. Two assistant baseball coaches and the Director of Baseball Operations at Northwestern University filed a lawsuit Monday, Aug. 14, 2023 against the school, its former head baseball coach, and various members of its administration. Attorney Chris Esbrook, who is representing all three former staff members, is quoted in ESPN.

Three former Northwestern baseball staff members filed a lawsuit Monday against the university, baseball coach Jim Foster, athletic director Derrick Gragg and two other athletic administrators.

“The prejudicial and biased attitude of the former head coach that also included the mismanagement of the players and staff ultimately led to Foster’s firing, something that should have been done months ago,” said Christopher J. Esbrook of the law firm Esbrook P.C., attorney for the Plaintiffs. “Northwestern had a responsibility to the players as well as to its staff to provide a safe and secure working environment. The Athletic Department as well as those overseeing that department failed in every way. These men tried to do the right thing, and Northwestern let down the entire team and community in its negligent handling of the matter.”

Former team staffers say the school failed to respond to reports of harassment, bullying and abuse against former head baseball coach Jim Foster.

Meet Our Staff! Stephen Brown - Partner.

Stephen is a litigator with extensive experience in all aspects of complex civil litigation. He has represented clients in federal and state court in a wide variety of disputes and has represented companies and individuals in responding to investigative subpoenas from government entities.

Before joining Esbrook Law LLC, Stephen worked at Jenner & Block LLP for more than ten years, first as an associate from November 2009 to December 2015, and then as a partner from January 2016 to September 2020. Before working at Jenner & Block, LLP Stephen served as a term law clerk to the Honorable James S. Gwin of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio.
