Don't be caught off guard.

It's Memorial Day Weekend, so it's time for our first taste of summer fun!

Unfortunately, that fun in the sun can lead to serious injuries. Whether that be on a boat with your family,

-Stay safe on the road: With more people traveling during the summer months, make sure to wear a seatbelt, drive sober, and avoid distracted driving.
-Protect against insects: Use insect repellent to protect yourself from ticks, mosquitoes, and other insects that can carry diseases.

Today marks the 154th anniversary of the completion of the first transcontinental railroad. It was a great accomplishment, but it carries with it a painful history of the treatment of Chinese laborers. We are highlighting this anniversary in honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

12-15,000 Chinese immigrants worked to build the railroad in the 1860's, making up 90 percent of the railroad laborers. As young as 12 years old, these workers were mistreated. They were paid up to 50% less than white workers and were forced to live in tents and pay for their own provisions, including room and board. medicine and even equipment. Outside of their treatment by their employers, many Chinese workers were attacked, lynched, and their homes burned down. Many of their names and stories were lost to history.

Labor laws in our country have come a long way, but poor work conditions, unfair pay and discrimination still happen (in fact, our firm has represented employees who have been underpaid and otherwise taken advantage of). Mistreatment and violence against people of Chinese and other Asian heritage still happen, too. This year for , celebrate our country's progress and recognize the work that is still ahead of us.
