A federal appeals court decided Wednesday that the identities of noncitizens released by the federal government from immigration jails in 2013 may be withheld from the public. A three-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals said that disclosing the detainees’ names would amount to an “unwarranted invasion” of their personal privacy and possibly jeopardize their safety. “The detainees would be publicly identified as unauthorized immigrants who had previously been held in government detention, a status which carries with it the potential for stigma, harassment, discrimination, illegal detention, and even violence,” Judge Stephen Reinhardt, a President Carter appointee, wrote for the court. President Trump early Thursday said he made no deal with Democrats to protect young immigrants, pushing back on a statement by the party's leaders. “No deal was made last night on DACA,” he said on Twitter, referring to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. “Massive border security would have to be agreed to in exchange for consent. Would be subject to vote,” he added. [ 218 more words ]

Every US immigrant's social media history is up for grabs starting Oct. 18. The US Department of Homeland Security quietly introduced a proposed amendment to its records regulations last week that would allow the agency to collect data from all immigrants' social media history, including posts from their Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts. CINCINNATI (AP) — A federal appeals court on Wednesday ordered U.S. immigration authorities to reconsider the case of a Mexican mother of four U.S.-born children who was deported last year while claiming she was threatened by a Mexican drug cartel. A three-judge panel of the Cincinnati-based 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of Maribel Trujillo Diaz. It said the Board of Immigration Appeals shouldn’t have rejected her motion to reopen removal proceedings based on new testimony about threats against her and her family by the Knights Templar cartel. The Department of Justice is appealing a federal district court judge’s decision to block the Trump administration from ending the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. DOJ said it filed a notice of their appeal to the 9th Circuit Court and intends later this week to take the “rare” step of asking the Supreme Court to bypass a 9thCircuit Court ruling and rule on the merits of the case so the issue can be “resolved quickly and fairly for all the parties involved.” [ 372 more words ]
