Some say, that certain things are better left unsaid or better yet never talked about, because they didn't exist, though they did. Walter Gordon's story brought to the light of day, by Doug Harris, of DougHarrisMedia, in my hometown of Berkeley California.
Walter's story touches some of my own because my mentor William "Bill" Hastie Jr, a black attorney in California followed Walter to the then Boalt Law School and in turn Walter Gordon followed William Hastie Sr, the first African-American federal judge and the first Ambassador of the Virgin Islands. Walter Gordon was the first in many ways, first All-American and the first Black All-American at Cal. The first Black law school grad from the then, Boalt Law School, now UC Berkeley Law School. The first black policeman in Berkeley. The courage, focus to battle the racism I am sure he encountered was phenomenal. Still he rose because he knew that whatever he did, he had to do it with "excellence and purpose." Those that have followed in Walter's footsteps didn't know he existed and with this story, it is great to know that someone, laid the groundwork "for excellence beyond measure." I know in my own life, in my career of serving the Black and Diverse Attorney of Color community throughout the US, the UK and Canada, that all the lawyers, I know, is that they only understand the phrase, "excellence, not good, not average, only excellence." I have patterned my career and step along the paths, that Judge Hastie, his son, William Hastie Jr have set within the legal profession in California and throughout the world. I am so proud to bring this man's legacy to you, via Doug Harris and Doug Harris Media.
