Tomorrow (Thursday, April 23rd) at 1 p.m., members of the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office will fly a very special American flag in Chesterfield County as part of this Nation‘s 250th birthday! In honor of America 250 programming, Flag Sojourn 250 is taking a single American flag to every U.S. state, every U.S. territory, and every U.S. military cemetery overseas. The journey wraps up as it touches the states of the 13 original colonies and concludes in Washington, D.C. We are honored that the flag will be flown in Chesterfield County for this stop on its journey around the world and represent the Commonwealth of Virginia. The location of the flag raising will be the largest flagpole in Virginia and fifth largest in the Nation at USA Iron and Metal at 1800 Coxendale Road in Chester. Already, the flag has traveled to all twenty-six overseas U.S. cemeteries and 40 States, uniting Americans everywhere. This shared journey is a tribute to our nation’s history, its heroes, and our bright future. Key partners for this galvanizing traveling campaign of unity include the National Flag Foundation, the American Battle Monuments Commission, and the National Sheriffs’ Association.

The Chesterfield County Police Department became aware this morning (March 23, 2026) that warning citations were issued to Woolridge Road drivers who were not exceeding the posted Woolridge Elementary school zone speed limit. Police personnel immediately took steps to correct the error and are working to communicate with all affected drivers. Because of this error, a new 30-day warning period for the school zone will begin on April 6, when students return after spring break. The police department apologizes for any concern or confusion created by this error and remains committed to immediately addressing such issues as they arise.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our recent poll! Based on your votes, police will conduct a traffic enforcement operation in the area of Courthouse Road and Lucks Lane on Friday, Sept. 26. Additional officers will patrol the area and enforcement will focus on speeding, reckless driving, seat belt use, impaired driving and mobile device use while driving. Remember to buckle up, drive sober, slow down, put the phone down and move over for first responders. If you have traffic safety concerns, you can share them with us here: https://www.chesterfield.gov/5916/Traffic-Safety-Concerns

And, since we know we’ll be asked, here’s why we announce these initiatives in advance: Our goal with these enforcements isn't writing tickets; believe it or not, we'd love to go out and see zero violations! We are simply trying to change behaviors so people recognize the responsibility of driving a motor vehicle and get to where they’re headed safely. It’s important to note that we perform unannounced traffic enforcement operations daily. We provide this type of advanced warning around times of the year associated with serious/fatal crashes to help expand our reach and effectiveness to deter unsafe driving behaviors.
