What should I have before turning an unpaid account over to an attorney?
The better the paper trail, the better place you are to start.
That may include contracts or agreements, invoices, account statements, payment history, emails or other communications, and notes about previous attempts to collect.
Don't worry if everything isn't tied up in a perfect little file. An attorney can help you determine what information is relevant and what may be missing.
But here's the bigger lesson: good collection documentation starts long before an account becomes a problem.
Keep the records. Save the emails. Document the conversations.
You may be very glad you did.
