The end of September marked the close of the Family Adversity competition, and after deliberating over hundreds of applicants, we selected Carla Villa from El Centro, California as the winner this past week. We were moved by Carla's incredible story of overcoming the challenge of the unexpected deportation of her parents in her freshman year of college that left her raising her 3 younger siblings while also facing a series of major family health challenges. After a 9 year journey following taking custody of her siblings, she was able to complete her undergraduate degree in 2012.
Today, she is enrolled at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego and focused on completing her Master's in Clinical Counseling. She cites her experience as the reason for her willingness to be open minded and non-judgmental of others and has learned that "integrity, patience, dedication, and responsibility" are essential to her success.
