Join us in urging legislators and Governor Abigail Spanberger to keep Virginia’s civil penalty for public ma*****na consumption at $25.

Raising fines for low-level ma*****na offenses does not improve public safety. It increases the risk of unequal enforcement and continues patterns where Black and Brown communities are disproportionately impacted.

It also places unnecessary financial strain on low-income Virginians, with consequences that can affect housing, employment, education, and immigration status.

Graphic with a green gradient background and large white text that reads, “Keep the public use fine at $25.” Below, smaller text states, “Virginia legalized ma*****na. Increasing penalties will burden Virginians and invite unequal enforcement.” A call-to-action in an outlined oval says, “Tell legislators and Governor Spanberger!” At the bottom, the Legal Aid Justice Center logo appears alongside the text, “Act now—sign the letter via link in bio/caption.”

The first image features the question in Spanish, "¿CÓMO ME VAN A IMPACTAR LAS NUEVAS LEYES DE 2026?" (How will the new 2026 laws impact me?), with a cream and orange background and a right arrow icon. The second image lists three key laws: 1) ICE AFUERA, which limits police collaboration with ICE; 2) SIJ A LOS 21, expanding access to Special Immigrant Juvenile Status for youth up to age 21; and 3) DPC, which changes Driver Privilege Cards to be valid for up to 8 years. There is a note about ongoing litigation affecting one law. The background is orange with a right arrow icon. The third image invites viewers to visit the Legal Aid Justice Center website for more information about what the laws do and how they can benefit immigrant communities. A Prince William County mother is speaking out after her daughter, a student with a disability, was restrained, handcuffed, and arrested at school.

Represented by LAJC, Tireese Winfield is seeking accountability, transparency, and stronger protections for students with disabilities in Prince William County Public Schools. She is also calling for reforms to School Resource Officer policies that prioritize disability awareness, appropriate accommodations, and de-escalation practices.

Watch the full interview through the link in our bio/caption to hear directly from Ms. Winfield about why she is speaking out.

If your child has experienced school policing, restraint, disability-related mistreatment, or other harmful interactions within Prince William County Public Schools, we want to hear from you. Share your story and sign up for our upcoming community listening session through the link below:

James City County is requesting state grant funding to place School Security Officers (SSOs), former police officers permitted to carry fi****ms in schools, in two new pre-K centers. Our youngest learners deserve safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate learning environments — not armed policing in their classrooms.

Join us at the Criminal Justice Services Board meeting on June 11 to oppose this request and show support for our students, educators, and families.
