Summer Vacation Custody Rules and Scheduling Conflicts

Attorney Jana K. Jones explains that in Mecklenburg County, summer parenting schedules often give each parent two non consecutive weeks of vacation time with the child during the school break. These weeks cannot be used back to back, but both parents are typically entitled to that time. Many custody orders also include tie breaker rules for holiday conflicts, such as alternating years for major holidays like the Fourth of July so each parent gets equal opportunity over time. The key factor is that these arrangements must be written into a court order to be enforceable. Without a clear order in place, disputes over vacation time can become difficult to resolve and lead to conflict between parents.

For many parents, choosing a godparent is meaningful. It is choosing someone you trust to be present, offer guidance, and hold a special place in your child’s life.

But there is another question worth asking:

If something happened to you, who would you want caring for your child?

That decision is too important to leave to assumptions.

Remember when jumping out of a swing midair felt like a perfectly reasonable decision? 😂

No helmet. No hesitation. No concern whatsoever about tomorrow.

Now we sleep wrong and spend two days wondering whether we need a heating pad, ibuprofen, or a new mattress. 😩

Funny how life changes.

The older we get, the more we realize that growth is not just about getting older. It is about learning when to take the leap, when to slow down, and when to stop pretending our knees are still 17.

That lesson applies to more than playgrounds. Life changes. Families change. Responsibilities change. The plans we made years ago may not fit the life we are living today.

So this week, give yourself permission to adjust, update, and protect what matters now.

And if somebody invites you to jump out of a swing midair, just smile and remember the good old days. Your knees already know the answer. 😂

Show a Pattern Before Filing
