I've had many people reach out recently about the area of law I now handle and also seeking referrals in various areas of the law. I truly appreciate you thinking of me for your legal needs.

My practice is now exclusively dedicated to court-appointed criminal appeals. Due to my current focus and caseload on court-appointed criminal appeals, I am no longer able to accept new clients in areas such as bankruptcy, divorce/custody, wills/estates, criminal trials/appeals, etc.

While I regret that I am currently out of the loop regarding local attorneys accepting new clients, I can certainly point you toward some resources to help with your search:

Michigan State Bar: The official website, michbar.org, offers a search function and a referral service. This is an excellent resource for confirming an attorney's good standing.

Avvo.com: This site features attorney reviews and a search function by location and area of law. www.avvo.com

Disclaimer: My firm and/or I do not endorse these sites and/or the attorneys listed on them, nor do we receive any compensation or referral fees from these sites or lawyers or law firms. My firm and/or I cannot guarantee the services, abilities, or outcomes of any attorney and/or law firm and/or the accuracy of any information found on these sites. Choosing legal counsel is a serious matter, and my firm and/or I highly recommend consulting with more than one attorney regarding your situation

Avvo has ratings, reviews, and disciplinary records for lawyers in every state. Get free legal advice, find the right lawyer, and make informed legal decisions.

Breaking News: Decision holding mandatory life without parole unconstitutional for 18-year-olds is declared retroactive
People v Poole (Docket No. 352569) decided January 18, 2024
The State Appellate Defender Office celebrates today’s outcome for our client John Antonio Poole. As an 18-year-old child, Mr. Poole was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. Now in his 40s, Mr. Poole has a chance at freedom. Today, the Court of Appeals held that all individuals who were sentenced to life without the possibility of parole as 18-year-olds are entitled to resentencing, regardless of when that sentence was imposed. The mandatory sentence of death in prison for an 18-year-old violates the state constitutional prohibition on cruel or unusual punishment.

More than 250 individuals in Michigan will now have the potential to receive new sentences offering an opportunity for parole. The State Appellate Defender Office is looking forward to representing many of those individuals in their resentencing hearings.

Mr. Poole’s attorney Maya Menlo said: “We are gratified by this decision. Mr. Poole and so many others like him who received unconstitutional life without parole sentences, deserve an opportunity to demonstrate that they are capable of rehabilitation.”

PSA for the day: SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS BEWARE. There's a reason they are called "WOW" because that is what you will be saying when they hit you with cancellation fees. Just wanted to give every small business owner a head's up if you have WOW internet or phone for your business. Might even want to check the contract you have with them for your residence as well. If you have business services or are thinking about signing up for business services with WOW, be sure to read the fine print very, very carefully about your contract length because WOW puts a few clauses in there you will definitely want to be aware of. 1) Be certain to know what your "contract length" is (36 months, etc.) because in the fine print is a clause that entire term on your original contract AUTOMATICALLY RENEWS for the same exact term whether you are aware of it or agree to it or not and 2) WOW will hit you with an early termination fee for your "remaining contract services" which = 75% of whatever term you signed up for is "left" of this renewal term and they will continue to charge you for their services until they get around to cancelling your services.

Heads up on the now MANDATORY online "harvest" reporting to the DNR requirement. Violation is a 90 day misdemeanor with heavy fines. Some hunters may be asked about what "type of hunting device" they used on the kill.

Starting with the fall 2022 deer seasons, online harvest reporting is required for all hunters who successfully take a deer, the DNR announced today.

As hunting season is quickly approaching, know your rights. Currently the DNR is allowed to enter private property without a warrant.

State Rep. Beau LaFave, of Iron Mountain, today introduced a measure to protect the private property rights of Michiganders.
