Happy Memorial Day!

Today, we honor the heroes who gave everything for our country. Their bravery and sacrifice remind us that freedom is never free.

As we spend time with family and friends, we pause to remember those who are no longer with us—and to carry their legacy forward with gratitude and respect.

When most people think about estate planning, they picture a will or maybe a trust — something that handles what happens after they’re dead. But what if something happens while you’re still alive and you suddenly can’t manage your finances?

That’s where a financial power of attorney comes in. It’s one of the most overlooked — yet most important — parts of any estate plan. Having one in place ensures that your money, property, and financial responsibilities are protected if you ever become unable to handle them yourself.

Learn about why a financial power of attorney matters on our blog at https://satterfieldlegal.com/why-its-important-to-have-a-financial-power-of-attorney/

Springtime is graduation season! This month we celebrate our Grads!

If your child plans to move away for college, make sure they have medical directives in place. Medical privacy rules change as soon as a child turns 18, so college students need to give their parents authorization to make medical decisions on their behalf if they are incapacitated.

Every year we help new adults get a HIPAA and Healthcare Power of Attorney and Living Will set up before they move onto their next chapter. If you or your child needs one or more of these documents, you can contact our office at 980-389-0701 or email [email protected] to get started!

For many adult children, talking to aging parents about estate planning can feel uncomfortable – even taboo. No one wants to think about a time when Mom or Dad won’t be around, and parents often don’t want to talk about it either.

But the truth is, having this conversation early can prevent confusion, stress, and even family conflict later on. It’s not about money or control – it’s about honoring your parents’ wishes and helping them maintain peace of mind as they age.

Learn why talking to your aging parents about estate planning is a necessary conversation on our latest blog post on our website.

April is Financial Literacy Month—a great reminder that understanding your finances is one of the most powerful tools you can have.

Financial literacy is more than budgeting and saving—it’s about building a strong foundation for your future and protecting what matters most.

Estate planning is a key part of that conversation. It ensures your wishes are honored, your loved ones are cared for, and your assets are managed the way you intend. Yet, it’s often overlooked until it’s too late.

This Financial Literacy Month, take a step beyond the basics. At Satterfield Legal, we work with trusted financial advisors to review your financial plan, start the estate planning process, or update existing documents. A well-prepared plan today can provide clarity and peace of mind for tomorrow.

Many believe a DNR Order is enough to express your medical wishes. While a DNR and Living Will can work together, there are key differences between the two documents.

A DNR is an order to your doctor not to perform CPR and to let you die naturally. A DNR must be signed by your doctor (typically in a hospital setting) and is specific to that hospitalization.

A living Will indicates your end-of-life wishes and allows you to name a point person to act on your behalf if necessary.

Because a living Will is broader than a DNR, it is important to sign a living Will once you reach adulthood. At Satterfield Legal, we are happy to prepare a HIPAA release and Healthcare Power of Attorney and Living Will that reflects your end-of-life wishes.

Estate planning isn’t about how much you have — it’s about protecting the people you love.

A solid estate plan gives your family clarity, security, and peace of mind during life’s most difficult moments. It ensures your wishes are honored, your assets are distributed properly, and your family can avoid unnecessary stress or court involvement.

No matter your stage of life — young professional, growing family, or nearing retirement — having a plan in place is one of the most responsible financial decisions you can make.

Planning today means protecting tomorrow.

If you’ve been putting it off, consider this your sign to start. Call our office at 980-389-0701 or send an email to [email protected].
