“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” - Aesop

Aesop got this right: small kindness isn't small to the person receiving it. A meal dropped at the door, a ride to an appointment, a note sent at the right hour, a five-minute check-in that says, “I’m here.” Families are held together by gestures that look ordinary from the outside and unforgettable from the inside.

One of the most overlooked gaps in an estate plan sits outside the will:

- IRA and 401(k) beneficiary forms
- life insurance designations
- payable-on-death accounts

Those forms often control distribution first. After marriage, divorce, a death, or a new diagnosis, a quick review can prevent painful surprises for the people gathered around the kitchen table later. A short planning conversation can catch what paperwork misses.

This Memorial Day, honor those whose service shaped families, communities, and futures they would never fully see. May today hold space for reflection, love, and a little extra tenderness with one another.

An estate plan needs checkups. Beneficiary forms change outcomes. Powers of attorney age with the people named in them. Care goals shift after illness, loss, or a move.

Monthly reading on elder law, probate, wills, and trusts can prompt the review a family has put off for too long.

The people who exploit older adults aren't always who you expect. More often, they arrive as new “friends,” helpers, or even relatives offering a little too much assistance. Real protection starts long before a suspicious charge hits a statement.

Consider naming more than one person to help with finances, building simple review systems for accounts, and writing down what healthy help looks like. Pair safeguards with honest conversations so loved ones feel protected.

Many families wait to ask questions until something has already gone wrong.

Conversations go more smoothly when you start earlier, while the person at the center of the plan can still share stories, fears, and preferences.

If you’re caregiving, aging on your own, or watching a parent’s health change, treat your questions as important information, not inconveniences.

Writing them down before you talk with a professional can turn an anxious appointment into a thoughtful planning session for everyone at the table.

Today we honor the people who mother us: birth moms, adoptive moms, stepmoms, grandparents, aunties, mentors, and friends who step in with care.

They packed lunches, sat beside hospital beds, showed up at recitals and hard talks, and modeled what love looks like on an ordinary Tuesday.

If this day is joyful, complicated, or tender for you, you’re not alone. May you find a small way to say “thank you” to the ones who helped you become who you are. Happy Mother's Day!
