Happy Father’s Day to the dads, grandfathers, stepdads, foster dads, mentors, and father figures who show up in ordinary ways: rides, repairs, reminders, patient listening, and the quiet work that keeps a family moving.

Wishing you a peaceful day with the people closest to your stories!

Beneficiary forms can affect where certain assets pass.

Retirement accounts, life insurance, payable-on-death accounts, and transfer-on-death forms may deserve a separate review from the will. A divorce, death, new child, new trust, or changed caregiving role may affect the names on file.

Packing list for college, with one category families often skip:

- health care proxy
- HIPAA authorization
- durable power of attorney
- FERPA waiver
- digital access plan

At 18, your student is an adult. If a medical event, banking issue, or sudden crisis hits, you may be shut out without written permission. Add these papers beside the bedding and mini fridge. Future-you will be glad they're there.

Family caregiving is unpaid, but it isn't invisible.

AARP's 2026 update puts numbers on it:
- 59 million caregivers
- 49.5 billion hours of care in 2024
- $1.01 trillion in economic value

Behind every number is someone tracking meds, lifting wheelchairs, missing sleep, and showing up again the next morning. If you're caring for someone, your labor counts, and so does your rest.

Care planning often lands on a family in pieces: pill bottles on one counter, rehab brochures on another, bank statements in a tote bag, siblings texting half-finished updates. Elder law planning pulls those pieces into one place: who can act, how care gets paid for, what support is available, and who needs rest. A monthly read on these topics can turn panic into a plan.

Myth: Your will controls every asset after death.
Fact: Many retirement accounts follow the beneficiary form on file, even if the will says something else.

That gap can unsettle spouses, children, blended families, and loved ones who need benefits protection. A trust may fit some situations, but only if the account forms and the estate plan work together. Put beneficiary reviews on the same calendar as tax prep.

“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” - Aesop

Aesop got this right: small kindness isn't small to the person receiving it. A meal dropped at the door, a ride to an appointment, a note sent at the right hour, a five-minute check-in that says, “I’m here.” Families are held together by gestures that look ordinary from the outside and unforgettable from the inside.

One of the most overlooked gaps in an estate plan sits outside the will:

- IRA and 401(k) beneficiary forms
- life insurance designations
- payable-on-death accounts

Those forms often control distribution first. After marriage, divorce, a death, or a new diagnosis, a quick review can prevent painful surprises for the people gathered around the kitchen table later. A short planning conversation can catch what paperwork misses.
