McAdoo Law Group Successfully Argues Case Restoring Barber-Scotia College’s Tax-Exempt Status
Charlotte, North Carolina — January 15, 2026
McAdoo Law Group, PLLC announced today that Attorney Morris “Mac” McAdoo successfully argued on behalf of Barber-Scotia College, resulting in the reversal of Cabarrus County’s decision to revoke the College’s tax-exempt status.
After a thorough legal challenge, the County’s action was overturned, preserving Barber-Scotia College’s long-standing nonprofit and educational tax exemption. The ruling ensures the institution can continue focusing its resources on its educational mission, community impact, and student support. “This decision is about fairness, due process, and recognizing the vital role that historic educational institutions play in our communities,” said Attorney Morris McAdoo, founder and managing partner of McAdoo Law Group. “Barber-Scotia College has served generations of students, and we were proud to advocate for the protections the law affords nonprofit educational institutions.”
The case involved complex issues of tax law, statutory interpretation, and administrative procedure. McAdoo Law Group argued that the County’s revocation was inconsistent with applicable law governing nonprofit educational entities and unsupported by the factual record.
Barber-Scotia College, one of North Carolina’s historically significant institutions, welcomed the outcome, which affirms its continued eligibility for tax-exempt status and provides clarity moving forward.
