Law school teaches you how to think like a lawyer. It does not teach you how to enter a time entry, respond to your first set of interrogatories, or navigate the day-to-day realities of practicing law.

That’s why every fall we welcome our newest associates for a two-day orientation. This year, eleven associates joined us in our Charlotte office to learn from our partners on topics ranging from timekeeping and billing to discovery, legal writing, and client communication. The learning continued outside the classroom, with an evening at Legion Brewing where associates and partners had the opportunity to build relationships and share experiences in a more informal setting.

But soccer mom Lara Love Hardin is hiding a shady secret, funding her he**in addiction by stealing her neighbors' credit cards, and her world is about to be turned upside down. Lara Love Hardin's tender and unflinching memoir, The Many Lives of Mama Love, explores themes of shame, identity, and redemption through the eyes of a woman learning that the distance between the PTA and a prison cell is smaller than she ever imagined.

Great turnout, great book, and even better discussion. Our D&I committee's book club proved once again that the best stories are worth talking about.

On September 27, 2026, members of our Charlotte team, along with their families and loved ones, proudly participated in the Keep Pounding 5K, helping raise critical funds for cancer research, patient care, and support services benefiting Atrium Health Levine Cancer and Atrium Health Levine Children’s.

The event was filled with memorable moments, including the opportunity to cross the finish line on the field at Bank of America Stadium. Even more inspiring was the collective impact of the community, with more than $140,000 raised to support patients and families facing cancer.

We are honored to support such a meaningful cause and grateful to be part of a community committed to making a difference.

After nearly 18 years with our firm, our controller, Diane Frederick, is retiring at the end of the month.

Since joining us in January 2009, Diane has been an invaluable member of our team and an excellent teacher and mentor to our accounting staff.

Members of our Charlotte team gathered recently to celebrate and wish her well.

Diane, thank you for so many great years. We can't wait to see what this next chapter holds for you!

Tonya Davis, Brooke Mulenex, and Joe Delfino all celebrate milestone anniversaries with the firm this month, and we are thrilled to have them on our team.

Tonya celebrates her 25th anniversary with the firm. A partner and workers' compensation defense attorney in our Raleigh office, she has spent her entire legal career with us. Outside the office, Tonya is a devoted mom to her son Braelon, and you'll often find her loudly cheering him on at soccer games.

Brooke is celebrating her 15th anniversary with the firm. A partner and workers' compensation defense attorney in our Charlotte office, she is focused on helping employers manage risk and exposure, she joined us as a summer clerk during law school and never left. She knew from childhood she wanted to be an attorney and now chairs the firm's Associate Development Committee, helping young attorneys launch their careers. Brooke is also a busy mom of two who is known for waking up really early in the morning to be sure she fits her workout classes into her busy schedule.

Joe is also celebrating his 15th anniversary with the firm. He is a partner and workers' compensation attorney in our Charlotte office and an active member of both the North Carolina State Bar and New York State Bar.

Congratulations to Brooks Miller on her appointment as Vice Chair of the NC Association of Defense Attorneys General Liability section! In this role, Brooks will help guide CLE programming, networking, and communication initiatives for NCADA's General Liability section members.

Brooks has spent her career defending individuals sued after car accidents and slip-and-fall incidents. Much of her work involves guiding first-time defendants through litigation, serving as both counselor and advocate as they navigate an unfamiliar and often stressful process.

We're excited to see her step into this role supporting professional development and networking for General Liability practitioners across the state.
