Child support isn't just based on income.

In North Carolina, child support calculations take many factors into account, including parenting time, health insurance, childcare expenses, and other financial considerations. Even small details can have a significant impact on the outcome.

In a recent blog, Nicole Sodoma breaks down how child support is calculated in North Carolina and explains why understanding the process can help parents make more informed decisions.

"Smart advocacy is not doing whatever your client wants you to do." — Kaylan Gaudio

One of the most important parts of family law is helping clients navigate emotionally charged situations with clarity and purpose.
That's where smart advocacy comes in.

For Kaylan, smart advocacy starts with making good decisions—not just legal decisions, but strategic ones.

It means verifying facts before presenting them to a court.
It means knowing when to be aggressive and when to de-escalate.
It means understanding that every decision should move a client closer to their goals.

"Our clients often say, 'I want the most aggressive attorney.' Being aggressive at certain times is appropriate, but it definitely needs to be strategic."

Sometimes the best advocacy isn't the loudest voice in the room.
Sometimes it's the attorney who helps a client stay focused on what matters most.

"I always include in my initial status letter: What are your top three goals?"
Because when clients identify what's most important to them, every recommendation, negotiation, and strategy can be measured against those priorities.

"Smart advocacy is giving your clients realistic expectations, giving them good guidance, and being the calm among the storm."
It also means being mindful of resources—using a client's time, money, and legal team wisely.

"Making sure that you're not spending the time, the energy, and therefore their money on things that are not going to help meet their goals."

At Sodoma Law, smart advocacy means combining legal knowledge with strategic judgment, helping clients make informed decisions that support the outcomes they care about most.
