Many people expect to inherit a parent's home outright — but some estate plans transfer only a life estate, which comes with significant limitations on what you can actually do with the property. 🏠 If you've been named a life tenant, understanding your rights before making any plans is critical.

Lord & Lindley is pleased to welcome Hyunwoo (Daniel) Kwak as a summer associate. 🎉 Daniel is a rising 3L at the UNC Chapel Hill School of Law, where he has focused his studies on business and commercial litigation — an interest shaped, in part, by growing up watching his parents navigate the realities of running their own businesses.

Originally from Goyang, South Korea, Daniel came to the United States in 2015 and attended Purdue University, where he pivoted from engineering to pursue a legal career—a decision that brought him to UNC Chapel Hill and, this summer, to Charlotte. 🌟 He previously served with the North Carolina Center on Actual Innocence, reflecting his commitment to careful, high-stakes advocacy that drew him to litigation in the first place.

We're glad to have him with us this summer. 👋

Most countries write their legal rules down in comprehensive codes. The U.S. inherited something different from England — a system where judges decide cases and those decisions become the law. ⚖️ It has been building, case by case, for over two centuries. Our new blog post explains why, and what it means for how disputes actually get resolved. 📖

⚖️ What happens when a trust dispute forces open a dead man's conversations with his attorney?

In Steele v. Kenna, the NC Court of Appeals ruled that attorney-client privilege has limits — even after death.

💡 If you're a trustee or beneficiary in a contested trust, those attorney files may not be as protected as you think.

🤝 A verbal promise doesn't make you a business partner — especially if the person making it didn't have the authority to do so.

North Carolina courts just made that clear in Londry v. Stream Realty Partners. Read our latest blog to find out what it means for your business.
