King Collaborative Family Law

King Collaborative Family Law Divorce is a transition. It does not have to be war. Choose Collaborative Divorce as your legacy. Since 2015, I have had a fully out-of-court practice.

As a Collaborative Divorce attorney and NC Board Certified Specialist in Family Law, I know that family law issues are not simply legal problems to solve. It takes experience, compassion and a high level of skill to peacefully and constructively manage the legal, emotional and financial considerations and consequences of divorce. After litigating high conflict cases for over a decade and experienc

ing the devastating aftermath the traditional adversarial approach imposes on families, I closed the courtroom doors and stopped litigating. I navigate divorce differently and take a supportive approach to ensuring your priorities and your children's sensibilities are at the forefront of my mind. Whether your divorce is amicable, or weighs heavily with uncertainty and complexity, I bring a creative, individualized approach to carefully guide you through this monumental life transition. In my role as a North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission Certified Family Financial Mediator, I empower people to solve their problems and stay out of court battles. I am an empathic and skillful neutral with a proven record of settling cases. I also have a deep understanding and high level of expertise in negotiating and preparing Prenuptial, Postnuptial, Separation and Cohabitation Agreements, and do not take a cookie cutter approach to formalizing agreements that are best for you at every stage of your relationship. On the personal side, I am originally from Fort Wayne, Indiana. I graduated summa cm laude from Miami University of Ohio in 2000 with a BA in political science and a minor in vocal music performance. I earned my JD from UNC School of Law in Chapel Hill, NC in 2004 and began practicing family law in Charlotte the same year. I love to sing classical and all types of music, have sung at Charlotte sporting events and at Naturalization ceremonies in the Western District of NC.

What happens in the Collaborative Divorce process?

It begins with a shared decision to handle all issues in the divorce in a process outside of court. Each client is guided by their own Collaboratively- trained attorney and a team of neutral professionals that navigate the process with legal, financial, child-centered and practical advice.

From there, information and documents are exchanged, keeping tough conversations transparent and children’s sensitivities at the forefront. Together, the professional team educates and works with the parties throughout the process to develop creative options for resolution.

Because the goal isn’t just an agreement - it is an intentional restructuring of the family in a way that supports both present needs and future impact.

Did you know that I am certified by the North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission to mediate both family financial matters and superior court cases?

Family financial mediations may take place before a lawsuit is filed or during ongoing litigation. These matters can include equitable distribution, alimony, child custody, child support, breach-of-contract issues, modification of prior orders, and complex separation matters.

I am also certified to conduct superior court mediations involving more complex civil disputes, including alienation of affection claims, criminal conversation claims, business and commercial disputes, contract and civil litigation, real estate and property disputes, employment and workplace disputes, medical malpractice, estate and trust litigation, and other civil matters.

Mediation offers a thoughtful, confidential approach to resolving disputes, providing parties with greater control, efficiency, and the opportunity to reach meaningful resolutions outside of the courtroom.

Saying “I do” is a beautiful beginning, and thoughtful planning can make that foundation even stronger.

A prenuptial agreement is not about expecting the worst; it is about creating clarity, transparency, and mutual understanding as you start your life together. By openly discussing financial expectations and planning intentionally for the future, couples can build trust and reduce uncertainty in the process.

Love is emotional, but a strong partnership also benefits from thoughtful planning. A prenup supports couples as they start their marriage with a shared vision for the ebbs and flows of the life road ahead.
