A Few months ago, I made a big professional decision for myself, my family, and my law practice.

I started La Strada Law a couple of years ago with a very specific goal: Change the status quo.

•Help clients with education first, so they can be in the driver’s seat.
•Make pricing transparent using flat fees as much as possible.
•Help clients keep their families out of court and conflict after they die.
•Help parents make sure their kids are protected and raised by people they trust in the way they want if something happens.
•Help small business owners proactively protect their business.
•Build a personal relationship with clients as a trusted advisor.

I carefully systematized everything and incorporated lots of technology to make things more efficient for clients.

Little by little, it all came together, and my vision worked. As my practice grew, I was focused on scaling to serve more clients. When I was introduced to William Bray last year, we quickly saw many great possibilities for serving estate planning clients by joining forces. And the rest is history.

Bray & Long, PLLC is a well-respected law firm and has served the Charlotte metropolitan community since 2003. I will be spearheading the estate planning practice area for the firm and will continue to work with small business owners.

With Bray & Long, we will take everything I built to the next level—serving more clients with an even greater client experience.

I am thrilled to join a team that has fully embraced how I work with clients. I will still flexibly work with clients in NC, SC, NM, FL, and NJ. I’m so excited for this next chapter with a wonderful team.

Of course, a special thanks to my family, friends, clients, and the Bray & Long family for all the support during this transition.

Jeneva Vazquez joined Bray & Long in February 2022 and practices in the areas of estate planning and corporate law.

The impact of inheritance: A “great wealth transfer” may be on the horizon. This article by Vox highlights the various outcomes of receiving an inheritance- both good and bad.

"The majority of people who inherit aren’t getting millions...less than one-fifth of inheritances are more than $500,000. The most common inheritance is between $10,000 and $50,000."

Regardless of how much you leave behind, putting together an estate plan can reduce expenses and time your family spend in court. Probate can eat up 3-8% of the total value of your estate in expenses alone. If you want to maximize the amount you leave behind to loved ones, estate planning is a must.

A "great wealth transfer" may be on the horizon. Will a gift from grandma save the middle class?

Country singer Taylor Dee, a 33-year-old mother of two children, died in a car crash earlier this month. She leaves behind her young son and daughter.

Her family, on a GoFundMe page, wrote that Dee "left this world sooner than any of us were ready for."

Although she was a rising star, her family is now in the position to seek community financial support to raise money to help with funeral expenses.

Her unexpected death is a terrible loss to her family and the country music community.

Regardless of age, especially if you have minor children, you are never too young to have an estate plan. Unfortunately, tragedy does strike, but being prepared is the greatest gift you can leave behind for those you love most.

There are so many important family dynamics to discuss to avoid conflict and infighting among descendants after a death.

It’s important to have an open dialogue when it comes to deciding how you will leave behind what you have. From leaving a family farm to small household items, there are multiple ways to avoid conflict if you plan correctly.

That's why we believe in a holistic approach to estate planning. Estate planning is not just a stack of documents- it's a series of complex decisions that dictate the outcomes you desire for those you love the most.

The process of winding up someone’s estate after death can be long, expensive, and tedious. If you are organized and prepared and your estate plan is up-to-date, the process is much more expedient and smoother.

Without updated trusted family or friends named to handle your estate, the process can be more complicated. This episode of the The Daily podcast by the The New York Times tells the story of one New York man named George Bell.

It illustrates what happens if you die without an updated Will, the logistics of locating assets, determining beneficiaries, and expenses associated with the process. 14 months after George Bell's death, his remaining $264k estate was split amongst those that were hardly connected with him at the time at his death or never even knew him.

It is worth your time to listen to this.

Even if you die with more family than George Bell, this process is not simple. But you have control. If you have an updated estate plan, asset inventory, and are well organized, this process can be much simpler, quicker, and cheaper than it was for his estate.

Chadwick Boseman's widow accepted the award for best actor in a motion picture drama at the Golden Globes on behalf of the late actor, who died in August of colon cancer at age 43. She honored his legacy in her emotional speech.

“He would say something beautiful, something inspiring, something that would amplify that little voice inside of all of us that tells you you can, that tells you to keep going, that calls you back to what you are meant to be doing at this moment in history.”

What legacy do you hope to leave behind?

It was the final role — and first win — for the late star of “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” who died in August from colon cancer at age 43.
