Nobody ever talks about this, but here’s what I think is the main advantage of owning a home: your disposable income increases as your wages increase.

People talk about the payment, and compare it to renting, but it’s always about today’s payment, today’s dollars.

What about one year from now when the rent increases, but a mortgage payment stays the same? What about 2 years from now? 5 years from now?

As your rent increases, your wages will probably increase, but will you be seeing that wage increase in your bank account? Or will it go to pay your increased rent payment?

Twenty years ago this week, my husband and I left the life we knew at Fort Bragg, NC, and moved to the Charleston area with our two young children in tow. We closed on our first home in Goose Creek in December 2005, built our life from scratch, and eventually made our way to Hanahan, where we still live today.

In 2007, I got my real estate license—right as the market was crashing—and relied on discipline, grit, and a commitment to serving people well to build a career that has now spanned nearly two decades.
