Why Are Helmets Important?

Helmets protect your head and brain by decreasing the energy or force from a collision or fall. A good helmet manages or absorbs much of the energy that would normally be sent to your skull and brain. The helmet must fit and be worn properly, including securing the chin straps.

Motorcycle helmets are very effective in protecting a motorcycle rider's head in a crash. Motorcycle helmets can help reduce fatalaties and brain injuries.

All Helmets are Not The Same

All helmets are not the same and many are made for different activities. Motorcycle and bicycle helmets must comply with federal safety standards. Recreational helmets may have different standards if any. Baseball helmets can help avoid direct contact with a speeding ball.

To learn more about which helmets are best for different activities, visit CDC Helmet Safety at https://www.cdc.gov/headsup/helmets/index.html.

Bicycle Helmets

Bicycle helmets made after 1999 must meet the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) bicycle helmet standard 16 C.F.R. part 1203, which help protect against skull fracture and severe brain injury when worn and used properly.

To learn more about when and how to wear a recreational helmet, visit the Consumer Product Safety Commission page on Helmets.

Kahn Law Firm, LLP wants you to have a safe and enjoyable time with recreational activities.

Your child's helmet should fit properly and be well maintained, age appropriate, worn consistently and correctly, and appropriately certified for use.
