Recently, all three Averett Family Law attorneys had the pleasure and privilege of being able to attend the North Carolina Annual Family Law Meeting in Charleston, South Carolina. The team at Averett Family Law is always excited to pursue new learning opportunities, and this conference allowed our attorneys to deepen their knowledge and collaborate with other family law professionals from across the state. They had a great time in Charleston and are looking forward to putting what they’ve learned into practice at the firm!

We are pleased to announce two new additions to the team here at Averett Family Law: Associate Attorney Chris deLambert and Paralegal Stevie Dees!

Between serving three combat tours in our nation’s military, completing his legal education at NCCU School of Law, and being a devoted father to seven and grandfather to five, Chris deLambert is one of the most impressive people we could have the pleasure of having at our firm. Upon joining the team in March, Chris dazzled us all with his ultra-cool persona and dedication to helping those around him. Chris is a fabulous attorney and colleague; we are excited for him to continue his legal practice here at Averett.

Stevie Dees also joined our firm in March and has begun working closely with Attorney Austin Vandeveer, assisting him with all of his cases, ranging from Family Law to Estates. Those who encounter Stevie will quickly realize that she is uncommonly kind, fashion-forward, proactive, and hard working. A North Carolina native, Stevie is passionate about advocating for families and helping them navigate times of transition and change. Stevie is also an avid wrestling fan and, now that Tom Brady is staying retired, a loyal Jimmy Garoppolo fan (Go Raiders!!!).

We know you will enjoy working with them as much as we do!

Message for Collin Willoughby, President of the North Carolina State Bar

The death of George Floyd, combined with the nationwide call to action inspired by that death and the senseless deaths of too many other people of color, has brought to the forefront of our lives the historical inequities of our justice system and of our society. Much has been said about the issues surrounding racial inequality in America, and yet much more needs to be said. And, most importantly, the anguish that underlies the protests needs to be heard and acted upon.

The Preamble to the North Carolina Rules of Professional Conduct calls upon lawyers to “seek improvement of the law, access to the legal system, the administration of justice, and the quality of service rendered by the legal profession.” Further, the Preamble demands that lawyers “be mindful of deficiencies in the administration of justice” and devote our time and toil to ensure “equal access to our system of justice for all.”

Tuesday, our Chief Justice pledged that our courtrooms will become an example of our shared commitment to the declaration that all people are created equal. North Carolina lawyers must heed and aid in the fulfillment of that pledge. We must dedicate ourselves to the ideals of our Preamble against the insidious injustice of racism, both implicit and institutional. If we truly believe in freedom and justice in this nation, then we need to embrace racial equality for all.

To the lawyers and citizens of North Carolina: The call to action has been heard; we stand with those who seek equal justice for all; and we promise to do our part to encourage, assist, and support lawyers in fulfilling their professional responsibility to do the same.

Colon Willoughby, President
North Carolina State Bar
