We hope everyone made it safely through Hurricane Ida. Now that the storm has passed, you’ve had a chance to assess your property damage (which hopefully is minimal), start your clean-up, and begin moving back toward normal.
But if your damage was not minimal, you should have contacted your insurance company and started the claims process.
Things you should do concerning your property damage claim:
- Take pictures of all your damaged property.
- Take notes of your conversations with your insurer, including dates and times.
- When your adjuster arrives, walk through the property with the adjuster (again, take notes).
Things to keep in mind concerning your property damage claim in Louisiana:
- When there is a catastrophic loss, the insurer has to initiate loss adjustment of a property damage claim within thirty days after notification of loss by the claimant.
- The insurer has to make a written offer to settle any property damage claim within thirty days after receipt of satisfactory proofs of loss of that claim.
- You’re also entitled to a copy of the insurer's field adjuster report regarding your property damage claim within fifteen days of requesting it.
If you need help through the claims process, or feel you’re not getting what you deserve, contact the Mumphrey Zelaya Law Firm at (504) 277-8989.
