This beautiful 7-year-old boy is Jeffery Taylor - he was bullied to death and called every racial slur in the book because he was the only black student in his class. He begged his teacher for help multiple times. She responded that he should shut up and sit down. So the verbal and physical bullying persisted until he took his own life. Last week would’ve been his 9th birthday - instead of taking Jeffery to his favorite restaurant for dinner his family did a balloon release at his gravesite.

My office, along with has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit on behalf of Jeffery’s family. We need accountability and answers. East Central ISD has failed to take any responsibility for discriminating against Jeffery and allowing him to be bullied.

We’d like you to meet 7-year-old Jeffery Taylor. He was a bright young kid, could light up a room with his smile and spirit. Nearly two years ago Jeffery was a first grade student at Salado Elementary in San Antonio, TX. He happened to be the only black student in his classroom. As a result, he was relentlessly bullied. Students called him the n-word, “blackie,” “snaggletooth,” and other names. It didn’t stop with racial slurs. They physically assaulted him on at least one occasion.

Jeffery reported the bullying to his teacher. She dismissed his complaints multiple times. Ignored him. Told him to shut up and sit down. The teacher went so far as to even segregate Jeffery, the lone black student in class, to one side of the room while all other students were allowed to be on the other side of the room. This continued for weeks.

The bullying changed Jeffery. His demeanor changed dramatically. He was scared to go to school. He appeared detached from his family and anxious. Depression sunk in. On the last day before his Christmas break Jeffery committed su***de after explaining to his mom that he was tired of the bullying.

East Central ISD failed Jeffery, just as they’ve failed so many other students in the district. I’ve personally heard the stories. This teacher is still employed. This district justified her actions. Join and I was we work to hold everyone accountable.
