Overbrook Insane Asylum

Overbrook Insane Asylum This page is for discussion about the now defunct Overbrook Insane Asylum. Stories, questions, advice, and pictures are all welcome here. How do you get in?

The administrators of this page are very familiar with the area and will gladly answer your questions to the best of our ability. We do not own the property and are not affiliated with the sanitarium in any way, but we have explored it many times. FAQ

Q: What is the best way to enter? A: The way I have always gone is I follow Bradford st, past pompton ave and past the new sanitarium. Just keep fo

llowing the road and it becomes windy and will take you right to the brick gazebo thing. I know there are other entrances but this is the one I always use

Q: Do I need to worry about being arrested? A: The fact is that the area is privately owned and if you explore you are technically trespassing and breaking the law. I have visited the are many times and never seen a cop, but I know a couple people who have been stopped by officers, but they were all let go with a warning. I think there are squad cars patrolling the street around it sometimes, but definitely no cops walking around the buildings. I think once you get in there you're OK, its the getting in and out I'd be careful of. Q: How much of the are is still intact? A: The area is very large and the city currently does not have the funds to demolish it all. So yes, there are still a lot of buildings that are still standing and available to explore. Q: Are the buildings locked? A: The doors to most of the buildings are locked. If you walk along the outside, however, you will find an entrance somewhere. Usually its a busted out window or something. This doesn't go for all the buildings though. Some (like the kitchen), I was unable to find a way into. I even tried to go through the roof! Hope this helps.

UPDATE: it's a sad day in the history of Overbrook. As of February 13th, 2016 the entire asylum has been fenced off with a chain link fence. There have been several "No Trespassing" signs posted around the area, as well as a guard in a vehicle that patrols the perimeter. This being said, it is now much more difficult to gain entry into the buildings. Additionally with the presence of security, if you are seen trying to go over the fence, the police will be called immediately. Be very careful if you are trying to explore the area, as you have no plausible deniability if caught on the property, and you will be charged with trespassing.

This is an abandoned facility about 500ft away from the main asylum, it appears to be a processing facility.

We receive a lot of messages asking about security and police presence around the area. Remember that this is area is on private property and trespassing is illegal. With that being said, I've been to this place at least 10 times and never encountered police or any security. Just a reminder if you plan to visit- do NOT park your vehicle in the area. Park in the new Essex county hospital's lot. It is a separate facility but is adjacent to the old asylum.

Now I don't believe in ghosts or anything but I thought I'd share a creepy story of the last time I went to Overbrook. It is 100% true and still gives me chills when I remember it. I was there with three of my friends shooting a scene for a film which involved a killer who wears a plain white mask. Now we were mostly in the basement level, shooting a chase scene. We had a bag filled with equipment and costumes which included the white mask, and this bag never left our sight for more than a couple minutes. After we were done shooting, our friend picked us up right outside the building. She points to the upper floor of the building to her right and asks me "Hey, I saw you waving at me from that window with your white mask on. How did you get to that upper floor?". I assumed she was messing with me so I laughed it off, but she just seemed confused. When I told her that we didn't even enter that building, she looked kind of frightened and told me that someone was wearing our white mask and slowly waving to her, and she had just assumed it was us. It didn't freak me out that much because I still thought she must have been pulling my leg, but this was about 2 years ago now and she still insists that she saw what she saw. Now I don't really buy into this paranormal stuff but I love hearing creepy stories.... whats the creepiest/scariest/funniest thing thats happened to you while you were snooping around Overbrook?
