⚖️ NEW VIRGINIA LAWS TAKE EFFECT JULY 1, 2026 ⚖️

Beginning July 1, several new Virginia laws will impact employers, employees, drivers, consumers, and firearm owners across the Commonwealth.

Some of the most significant changes include:

✅ PAY TRANSPARENCY
Employers will generally be required to include salary ranges in job postings and will be prohibited from asking applicants about prior salary history.

✅ MINIMUM WAGE INCREASES SCHEDULED
Virginia's minimum wage remains $12.77 per hour for now, with increases scheduled to $13.75 in 2027 and $15.00 in 2028.

✅ NEW SPEEDING ENFORCEMENT OPTION
Drivers convicted of driving 100 mph or more may be required to participate in Virginia's new Intelligent Speed Assistance Program, which can limit vehicle speed through installed technology.

✅ ASSAULT FIREARM RESTRICTIONS
Virginia has enacted restrictions on the sale, purchase, manufacture, importation, and transfer of certain fi****ms defined by statute as "assault fi****ms." Current lawful owners may generally retain fi****ms already possessed before the effective date.

✅ EXPANDED EMPLOYMENT PROTECTIONS
Several employment law changes expand compliance obligations for Virginia businesses and employers.

Ever wonder about titling assets between spouses or others with survivorship?

Titling real estate or assets (like a car) with survivorship is a type of joint titling between two or more folks. The rationale is to ensure that the asset transfers to the other party or parties immediately upon death of one party, outside of probate.

SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT IDEA! ...WITH THE BEST OF INTENTIONS! ...WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?

Like every great idea, there are drawbacks. If a party is incapacitated - brain injury, stroke, dementia, etc. - but does not die, the remaining owners cannot do anything with the asset. Why? Because the incapacitated party did not die, the asset will not transfer. If he or she cannot sign due to incapacity, the asset is stuck. This happens A LOT with married couples.

A General Durable Power of Attorney solves this problem. EVERY married couple needs a POA appointing each other and possibly a successor. In fact, every individual needs one. It is an inexpensive solution to what happens if a person becomes incapacitated. Important note - your agent MUST be someone who is trustworthy.
