A widespread misconception in North Carolina rentals may prevent providers from using all permitted screening tools.

Myth:
Rental housing providers cannot require rental applicants to provide a photo ID or make a copy of it.

Reality:
North Carolina law allows housing providers to require and retain applicant identification as part of lawful screening and recordkeeping. HUD has also acknowledged that requesting ID is permissible when applied consistently and without discrimination.
