🚨 SCAM ALERT: That “rental” you saw on Facebook might not be for rent!

We’re seeing a scam that’s becoming far too common on Facebook Marketplace and social media.

Scammers are taking photos and information from legitimate homes listed for sale by real estate brokerages, reposting them, and claiming the property is for rent.

The house is real.
The photos are real.
The rental listing is not.

The scammer may offer a rent amount that seems like a great deal, tell you they’re out of town or can’t meet in person, and then ask for an application fee, deposit, or first month’s rent to “hold” the property.

Once the money is sent, they disappear.

🔎 Before sending anyone money for a rental:

• Search the property address online and see if it is actually listed for sale.
• Look for the real estate brokerage or agent connected to the property.
• Call the brokerage directly using a phone number you find independently, not just the number provided in the Facebook post.
• Be very cautious if someone refuses to meet you or show you the property in person.
• Never send money simply because someone says there are “several other people interested” and you need to act immediately.
