We are sad to announce the passing of Bill O'Neal, former Texas State Historian and a longtime member of the faculty at Panola College. Bill passed away at his home in Carthage on November 3, 2025, at the age of 83. Born in Corsicana in 1942, Bill graduated from Corsicana High School, Navarro College, and East Texas State University (now East Texas A&M University). He earned an associate’s degree from Navarro College (1962) and two degrees from East Texas: bachelor of arts (1964) and master of arts (1969). He then taught, served as the athletic advisor, and coached the football teams at Anna High School (1967-1968) and Waskom High School (1968-1970), with a career record of 14-5-1. In 1970, he joined the faculty of Panola College, where he taught for 41 years. His many courses included a “Traveling Texas” history class twice each summer, covering a total of 2,100 miles. Bill received the first annual "Excellent Teacher" award at Panola College (1973) and first Minnie Stevens Piper Professorship award there (2000). In 2013, a dormitory was named in his honor. He expanded his impact by developing several blog sites and writing dozens of books. Most were about western history, especially Texas, but he wrote on other topics, including baseball. He was appointed as State Historian in 2012 and served until 2018. Among his awards were the A.C. Greene Literary Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Wild West Historical Association. In 2007, True West Magazine declared that he was the West's "Best Living Nonfiction Writer." Navarro College made him a Distinguished Alumnus in 1986, and Texas A&M at Commerce gave him an honorary Doctor of Letters degree in 2013.

🚧 Road Closure Reminder for Halloween on the Square! 🎃

Downtown Carthage will be filled with trick-or-treaters and fun this Friday, October 31, for Halloween on the Square from 5 PM – 7 PM!
To keep everyone safe, the following roads will be closed from 4 PM until approximately 7:30 PM:

🟠 W. Sabine St. from Market St. up to the square
🟠 S. St. Mary St. from E. Wellington St. up to the square
🟠 E. Panola St. from Live Oak up to the square
🟠 Shelby St. from the parking lot across from the Old Jail up to the square

Please plan ahead and avoid driving through these areas and around the square if possible during this time to help keep traffic moving smoothly and ensure a safe, fun evening for all our little ghosts and goblins. 👻
