At Carmel Family Law, we stand beside the fighters, honor the survivors, and remember those we’ve lost. 💗

Documenting communication with a co-parent can be essential—especially in high-conflict or legally sensitive situations. Here are practical and effective tips:
1. Choose the Right Communication Method
-Written formats are best for documentation:
-Text messages
-Emails
-Parenting apps (e.g., OurFamilyWizard, TalkingParents, AppClose)

These provide automatic time/date stamps and are easy to archive.

2. Be Clear, Concise, and Respectful
-Stick to factual information.
-Avoid emotional language, name-calling, or sarcasm.
-Use a business-like tone, even if the other parent doesn’t.

3. Log Verbal Conversations
-After phone or in-person conversations, write a summary (include time/date, topic, etc).

4. Save Everything in One Place
-Keep all communication in organized folders (by month, topic, or child).
-Use a shared calendar (Google Calendar or a co-parenting app).

5. Document Missed Visits or Agreements
-Keep it objective and factual:
“You did not arrive for the 4 PM pickup on July 10. I waited until 4:30 before leaving.”

6. Avoid Editing Messages
-Don’t delete or heavily edit messages. Courts often review communication history for patterns. Screenshots should include timestamps and full conversations.

7. Backup Regularly
Export and save copies of texts, emails, and app logs.

8. Protect Your Privacy
-Set boundaries: Don’t allow the co-parent to contact you through informal channels like social media or shared family chats.
-Use apps that allow message monitoring or restrict editing/deleting.

Bonus: Use a Communication Log Template
