💙 Preparedness Over Panic 💙
We want to share thoughtful observations with our community regarding recent policy developments in Indiana.
Over the past several weeks, we have been monitoring multiple developments that may affect immigrant families, including:
• Expansion of the Carmel ICE office
• Indiana’s Senate Bill 76 (SB 76) on Immigration Enforcement
• New National Guard military police authority
• Reports of Indiana State Police officers receiving federal immigration enforcement authority
Our goal is simple: keep our community informed so families can make empowered decisions.
This does not mean panic.
It does mean preparation.
Being informed and having a plan has always helped families navigate uncertainty. That is what we are here to help with.
🔎 What We’re Observing
Based on reports within our practice and from colleagues across Indiana:
• Immigration enforcement encounters appear to be resulting in detention more frequently
• Having a pending immigration case may not provide protection from detention in all circumstances
• Individuals without lawful permanent residence (LPR) or a currently valid, approved nonimmigrant status may face increased risk if encountered
• Some individuals with pending applications — including certain applicants with work authorization — may still face risk
• Enforcement activity appears elevated for recent parole entrants and individuals with prior removal orders
Under current policy, many individuals who entered the U.S. without inspection may not be eligible for bond if detained by ICE. This can result in prolonged detention while cases are pending.
This is why advance family planning is so important.
📝 Preparedness Checklist for Indiana Families
✔ If you have employment authorization, obtain your Indiana driver’s license as soon as possible
✔ Keep your license current and valid
✔ Limit driving when possible, carpooling and ridesharing can reduce risk
✔ Arrange alternative transportation when available
We recognize that Indiana does not currently provide driver’s licenses to undocumented individuals, and public transportation is limited in many areas. However, driving without a valid license in Indiana can result in criminal charges that may trigger detention and immigration holds.
✔ Keep copies of all immigration documents in a safe, accessible place
✔ Create an emergency family plan covering childcare, finances, and medical needs
✔ Identify trusted contacts who can assist if a family member is detained
✔ Minimize unnecessary interactions with law enforcement when possible
🤝 How We’re Supporting Our Community
We are actively exploring ways to support families if enforcement activity increases.
Preparedness is not fear.
Preparedness is empowerment.
We will continue to share information responsibly as developments occur. Our mission is to provide clarity and support, not to create alarm.
Every family’s situation is unique. If you have questions about your specific circumstances, please contact our office directly for a confidential consultation.
