Cheever Law, APC

Cheever Law, APC There are many misconceptions about estate planning and whether it is necessary for people where estate taxes are not a concern.

We serve clients in a genuine, compassionate, and professional manner by listening to their concerns and fulfilling their wishes to create customized estate plans designed to keep families out of court and conflict in the event of incapacity and at death. We provide a full range of estate planning services, starting from counseling clients on what components they should consider and then implement

ing their wishes. Through the use of Trusts, Wills, Durable Powers of Attorney and Advance Health Care Directives, we help families preserve their wealth for future, avoid the process of probate, put a plan in place to ease the pain by family members at death and minimize exposure to estate taxes. For middle class individuals and families, estate planning provides tremendous peace of mind knowing that your affairs are in order. Estate taxes are only one component of planning. The more important part of planning involves naming guardians for minor children, establishing a trust for children, especially if the child has special needs, designating beneficiaries of your treasured possessions, and making decisions now that will help you in the event of an illness or accident in the future. Incapacity planning is an important aspect to estate planning by putting the right tools in place to avoid a Living Probate or Guardianship proceeding in the event that you become ill or disabled and you are unable to care for yourself. We also work with small business owners to help them navigate the legal landscape, focusing on minimizing exposure to loss and using strategies such as contracts and entity formation to protect their companies. Business owners are busy running their businesses and may not have taken the time to ensure their company is properly protected and structured. Cheever Law handles all aspects of business planning to ensure your business is protected and your chosen entity is in compliance in order to avoid any potential personal liability. Our practice includes Small Business Planning and Business Succession Planning.

The best vacations aren’t just about where you go. They’re about how you feel while you’re there. ☀️🌊

There’s something special about watching your family laugh, relax, and make memories together. No schedules. No stress. Just time spent with the people who matter most.

But peace of mind doesn’t happen by accident.

One of the things we hear from clients after completing their Life & Legacy Plan® is how much lighter they feel. They know their wishes are documented, their loved ones are protected, and the important decisions have already been made.

That kind of peace of mind makes every moment a little sweeter.

Because protecting your family isn’t just about planning for the future. It’s about being fully present today.

What helps you truly relax when you're spending time with the people you love most? 💛

💬 Q&A Time

"My family already knows what I want."

This is one of the most common things we hear when people talk about estate planning.

And while those conversations are incredibly important, they are only part of the picture.

The reality is that even the closest families can face challenges when wishes haven't been documented properly. During a time of grief or crisis, loved ones may be left trying to remember conversations, interpret intentions, or navigate legal processes without the authority they need to act.

An estate plan isn't just about sharing your wishes. It's about making sure the people you trust have the legal ability to carry them out.

A well-designed plan can help reduce confusion, avoid unnecessary delays, and provide clear guidance when your family needs it most.

Because hoping everyone remembers what you wanted is very different from having a plan that ensures your wishes are honored. 💛

Have you had conversations with your loved ones about your wishes, or is it something you've been meaning to do?

You spent years building your business. But have you thought about what happens to it if you're no longer the one running it?

For many business owners in blended families, this question is more complicated than it seems.

Maybe you have children from a first marriage. A spouse who helped you grow the business through its most successful years. Stepchildren you love as your own. And a vision for how everything should be passed on and protected.

The challenge is that the law may not see your family the same way you do.

This comes up more often than people realize. Without a clear and intentional plan, default laws can determine who inherits, who controls the business, and who has a voice in important decisions. And those outcomes may look very different from what you intended.

I've seen families who genuinely care about one another find themselves facing confusion, delays, and conflict simply because important decisions were never documented.

A business succession plan isn't just about protecting a company.

It's about protecting the people behind it.

The spouse who depends on it. The children who may inherit it. The employees who rely on it. And the legacy you've worked so hard to build.

The most successful transitions don't happen by accident. They happen because someone took the time to create a plan that reflects the family and business they actually built.

Have you ever thought about whether your current plan truly reflects your family, your business, and the future you want for both?

Love shows up in the little moments.

It’s in the packed lunches, the check-in calls, the family dinners, and the everyday acts of care that often go unnoticed. 💛

But love also shows up in a quieter way.

It’s in the decisions we make today to protect the people we care about tomorrow.

Most people don’t realize that estate planning isn’t really about documents. It’s about making things easier for the people you love if life takes an unexpected turn. It’s about creating clarity instead of confusion, and peace of mind instead of uncertainty.

A thoughtful plan is one of the most meaningful gifts you can leave behind because it continues caring for your family, even when you can’t be there yourself.

As we start a new week, consider this:

What is one step you could take today that your future self and your loved ones would thank you for?

Being a father isn’t just about biology.

It’s about showing up.

It’s the school pickups, the late-night talks, the practices, the celebrations, and the everyday moments that build a family. 💛

But here’s something many stepfathers and father figures don’t realize:

The law may not recognize the role you’ve spent years living.

This comes up more often than you’d think. A stepfather can be the person a child turns to for everything, yet without proper planning, he may have no legal authority in an emergency, no automatic guardianship rights, and no way to ensure assets pass to the children he helped raise.

That gap between the family you live in and the family the law recognizes can create heartbreaking challenges when families need clarity the most.

The good news is that thoughtful planning can change that.

A Life & Legacy Plan can help ensure your wishes are documented, your role is protected, and the people you love are cared for according to your intentions.

Because family is built through love, commitment, and showing up every day. Your legal plan should reflect that reality.

Have you ever been surprised by something the law doesn't automatically recognize when it comes to family relationships?

There’s a different kind of peace that comes from knowing you’ve already handled the things most people keep putting off.

Not because you expect something to go wrong.

But because you know the people you love would have a clear plan if life ever took an unexpected turn.

We often hear people say they feel a sense of relief after putting their estate plan in place. The paperwork may not be exciting, but the peace of mind that comes with it certainly is. 💛

Knowing your wishes are documented, your loved ones are protected, and important decisions won’t be left up to chance can help you rest a little easier.

Future-you will be grateful. And so will the people who count on you most.

What’s one thing you've been meaning to take care of "someday" that would give you more peace of mind today? 😊

💬 Q&A Time

Most people spend time planning for what happens after they're gone.

But have you thought about what would happen if you were still here, yet unable to manage your own finances?

A medical emergency, accident, or unexpected illness could leave your loved ones trying to handle bills, access accounts, or make important financial decisions without the legal authority to do so.

That's where a Durable Power of Attorney becomes so important. It allows you to choose someone you trust to step in and manage financial matters on your behalf if you're unable to do so yourself.

This comes up more often than people realize, and without the proper documents in place, families can face delays, added stress, and even court involvement during an already difficult time.

Planning ahead isn't just about protecting your assets. It's about making life easier for the people who may one day need to help you. 🤍

Have you chosen someone you trust to handle your financial affairs if needed?

The business your dad built may be one of the greatest gifts he ever gave his family. But what happens if he can no longer run it?

Around Father's Day, we celebrate the sacrifices fathers make for the people they love.

The early mornings. The late nights. The risks they take. The years spent building something that provides for their family and creates opportunities for others.

But there's a question many business owners never fully answer:

What happens to the business if you're suddenly not there to lead it?

This comes up more often than people realize. A successful business can quickly face uncertainty when there is no clear succession plan in place. Employees may not know who is in charge. Family members may be left making difficult decisions. Partners, clients, and vendors can be left wondering what happens next.

The reality is that building a business and protecting a business are two different things.

A strong succession plan isn't just about ownership documents. It's about protecting your family, your employees, your clients, and everything you've worked so hard to build.

Because the legacy of a business isn't measured only by its success today. It's measured by whether it can continue serving the people you built it for tomorrow.

If something happened to you, would your family and business know exactly what comes next?

The future isn't built in a single day. It's built through the small decisions we make along the way. 🤍

The strongest foundations don't happen by accident.

They're built with care, intention, and a vision for what matters most.

Whether it's raising a family, growing a business, or creating a plan to protect the people you love, the choices you make today can have a lasting impact tomorrow.

Estate planning is much the same. It's not about expecting the worst. It's about creating a solid foundation so the people you care about have clarity, support, and peace of mind when they need it most.

A little planning today can make a meaningful difference for generations to come.

What's one step you're taking today to build a stronger tomorrow? ✨

But there's another question that often gets pushed aside:

If something happened to you, who would take care of your children?

Most people have an answer. A sibling. A grandparent. A close friend.

The problem is that an answer in your head isn't a legal plan.

This comes up more often than you'd think. Families assume everyone knows what they want, only to discover during a crisis that no legal instructions were ever put in place. That's when courts, not parents, may end up making important decisions.

One of the greatest gifts a father can leave behind isn't money or possessions.

It's clarity.

It's knowing your children would be cared for by the people you trust, according to the wishes you've thoughtfully put in place.

This Father's Day, it may be worth asking yourself:

Have you truly answered the question, or have you just thought about it?
