A Stark County man has been sentenced to 14 to 17½ years in prison following his conviction on two counts of r**e, both first-degree felonies.

Marquell Hill, 32, was convicted after DNA evidence collected during the investigation was matched to him.

We thank Assistant Prosecutor Richard Nicodemo for his work in prosecuting this case, as well as the law enforcement officers and professionals involved in the investigation.

Yesterday evening, the Stark County Interfaith Coalition held a powerful meeting focused on gun violence prevention.

As a community, we experienced the unification and fellowship of people of different faiths, children and adults, government agencies, community leaders, and residents—all coming together for an important conversation.

We had the honor of hearing directly from gun violence survivors and community leaders, while also having the opportunity to ask questions and discuss how gun violence impacts our community physically, mentally, and spiritually.

Thank you to the Interfaith Coalition for hosting this meaningful event and to Zion’s Temple Church of God for opening its doors and providing a space for such a profound and necessary conversation. Together, we can continue working toward a safer and stronger community.

Conflict is a part of life, but how we respond to it can make all the difference.

Today, our team had the opportunity to speak with Goodwill staff about resolving conflict professionally-both within the workplace and in interactions with customers and members of the community. We shared practical strategies for pausing, understanding the situation, responding respectfully, resolving concerns when possible, and escalating appropriately when additional support is needed.

This presentation is part of Stark County Prosecutor Kyle Stone’s ongoing initiative to educate the public, strengthen communication, and help create safer, healthier workplaces and communities.

KNOW THE LAW SERIES: Evidence Matters ⚖️

People often ask why someone has not been charged when it may seem clear from the outside what happened.

But what people believe happened and what prosecutors can prove in court are not always the same thing.

Before pursuing a criminal charge, prosecutors must evaluate the evidence, witness testimony and credibility, applicable law, constitutional requirements, and whether the evidence can prove every element of the offense beyond a reasonable doubt.

Prosecutors have an ethical responsibility to make charging decisions based on the law and the evidence, not public pressure or personal opinion.

Sometimes that distinction can be difficult to understand when looking at a case from the outside. That is why understanding the legal process matters.

Evidence matters. The law matters.

A Canton woman has been sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for the murder of 54-year-old Jerry Morris.

Yolanda Lowery, 54, pleaded guilty to Murder, Kidnapping, Tampering with Evidence, and Gross Abuse of a Co**se. The charges stemmed from an incident in which Lowery kidnapped Morris, beat him to death, and dumped his body in Akron.

Today, a survivor of domestic violence chose to use her voice.

During today’s case, she shared why she made the difficult decision to testify-not only for herself, but for past and future victims who may be afraid to come forward.

Her story is a powerful reminder that speaking up can give others the courage to do the same.

We are grateful to law enforcement, Assistant Prosecutors Jennifer Dave and Eunice Asamoah, Judge Kristin Farmer, and Victim Advocate Sue Rayner for their work and support throughout this case.

To every survivor who may be struggling in silence: You can be strong. You can speak up. You do not have to tolerate domestic violence.

A Stark County man has been sentenced to 9 to 11½ years in prison following his conviction on two counts of Strangulation, Domestic Violence, and Aggravated Menacing.

The victim chose to testify and see the case through, hoping her decision would encourage other survivors of domestic violence to find their strength, speak out, and not be afraid to come forward.

We thank Assistant Prosecutors Jennifer Dave and Eunice Asamoah for their work in prosecuting this case, Judge Kristin Farmer for presiding over the case, and Victim Advocate Sue Rayner for her support and assistance to the victim throughout the process.

KNOW THE LAW SERIES: Understanding Sentencing in Ohio ⚖️

Post #2: Why Do Similar Cases Sometimes Receive Different Sentences?

It is a question we often hear: If two people are charged with the same offense, why might they receive different sentences?

The answer is that no two cases are exactly alike.

A criminal charge is only one part of the picture. When determining a sentence, several factors may affect the outcome, including:

• Criminal history
• The impact on the victim
• The specific facts and circumstances of the offense
• Plea agreements
• Cooperation
• Mitigating or aggravating circumstances

Two cases may have the same charge on paper but involve very different facts. Those differences can affect the sentence imposed within the limits established by Ohio law.

Looking only at the charge rarely tells the entire story.

Through our Know the Law Series, the Stark County Prosecutor’s Office is working to provide the public with a clearer understanding of how the criminal justice system works.

The more we understand the law, the more informed our conversations become.

KNOW THE LAW SERIES: Understanding Sentencing in Ohio ⚖️

One of the most common questions after a criminal case is, “Why wasn’t the sentence longer?”

Sentencing is not simply a matter of choosing a punishment. Ohio law establishes the sentencing ranges for criminal offenses, and prosecutors and judges must operate within those legal limits.

Prosecutors can advocate for a sentence and make recommendations to the court, but ultimately, the judge imposes the final sentence within the boundaries established by law.

Through our Know the Law Series, the Stark County Prosecutor’s Office will help explain how Ohio’s criminal justice system works and the different roles prosecutors, judges, and the law play throughout the process.

The more we understand the law, the more informed our conversations become.
