💀 Sometimes the scariest stories in the graveyard are the true ones.
This headstone marks the grave of a Camden merchant and his wife, who both died in 1822. Look closely and you'll see bullet marks in the stone. In 1829, Colonel Henry Nixon had a duel coming up, so he came here and used the headstone for target practice. 🎯
It didn't help. He was killed, and his father built a wall around his grave. Camden started an anti-dueling society that same year… and it didn't work.
Fifty years later, Camden lawyer William Shannon, a father of 14, accused another man's wife of fraud in court. She got sick and died, and her husband, Colonel Cash, wanted a duel. On July 5, 1880, they met near Bishopville. Cash fired once, and Shannon died.
That December, South Carolina made dueling a crime. It was the last fatal duel in the state.
Plot twist: none of it is legend. The bullet marks, the wall and the last duel are all on record. 📜
