Before vacation homes lined the coast and beach weeks became a summer tradition, Holden Beach was built on something much simpler. The water.

Sh*****ng has been a way of life here for generations. Along the Intracoastal Waterway and surrounding creeks, local fishermen would head out before sunrise, working long days pulling nets and bringing in the fresh catch that helped define this area.

Back then, Holden Beach was quiet and largely undeveloped. No bridge at first, just boats and ferries connecting the island to the mainland. Life moved with the tides, and sh*****ng was not just a job, it was how families provided, built livelihoods, and passed down skills from one generation to the next.

That tradition helped shape the entire region. Nearby Calabash grew into a seafood destination, and the “Calabash style” of cooking became known far beyond North Carolina. What started with local shrimp boats and small operations turned into a coastal identity that still exists today.
