There are people who entertain the world, and then there are people who quietly change the way we see it. Dolly Parton was one of those people. She taught me that the world doesn’t have to make you harder in order for you to succeed in it.

You can become extraordinary without pretending you came from somewhere else. Perhaps that’s what stayed with me most. And that has influenced the way I see people, places, and life itself.

I have come to believe that our identities are made from the places we’ve known, the people we’ve loved, the stories we’ve inherited, and the worlds we’ve imagined for ourselves.
