The Citizens Water Company building was designed by Temple & Burrows, a prominent architectural firm based in Davenport. The Classical Revival design with unique white glazed terra cotta tile facade is unique among Burlington architecture. The four lions have observed the growth and evolution of this city since the building’s completion in early 1915. A step inside reveals a historic interior with marble floor entry, iron teller window, ornamental ceiling decor, iron stair banister and quarter sawn oak flooring.

With the closing of 2023, Beckman Law Offices is no longer accepting new clients or starting anything new. Other than finalizing a few estates & trust matters, I have completed my final year in the practice of law. As I look back on the path that brought me to retirement, it comes with the realization of the twists and turns that life so often takes.

I left Burlington to pursue an engineering degree at Iowa State University. That degree took me to Collins Radio, where I worked my senior year as part of a five-year cooperative program. The advancements that were taking place in electronics were fascinating to me, but they pale in comparison to where we are today with super computers and artificial intelligence. While at ISU I took enough accounting to take and pass the CPA exam.

As I considered grad school, I enrolled at the University of Iowa Law School. Following graduation, much to my father's surprise, I made the decision to return to Burlington to join the Beckman Law Firm. It was my good fortune to enjoy the good counsel of my dad, Richard Beckman, working side by side for 17 years. He continued the legacy of my grandfather, Stephen Beckman, who began the practice in 1901. I have done my best to live up to and continue the legacy my father left me.

The plans we make now for the new year, may or may not turn out the way we hope. I'd never have dreamed in my Iowa State days that I would become an attorney and raise my family in my hometown. Returning to Burlington and serving clients in SE Iowa for nearly 50 years has been a privilege and an honor. Your trust and faith in my service made my career rewarding in more ways than I can express.

So I wish all of you a happy new year and I encourage you to give your heirs the gift of strong estate planning and organization of your affairs. Prepare for the inevitable and cherish every day you have with family and friends.

I would like to share my future plans with my valued clients and friends. Effective immediately, I have accepted the position of counsel with the Kozlowski Law Group.

This decision has been made with sincere consideration for how best to serve my clients as I transition toward retirement. Having benefited from the good counsel of attorneys before me, most specifically my father, Richard Beckman, I consider it a privilege to be of counsel for a firm that will serve Southeast Iowa long into the future. I look forward to a continued relationship with KLG partner Mio Santiago, as he expands the probate practice of the Kozlowski firm.

Beckman Law Offices at 314 North 4th Street will remain open and I will continue to serve my current clients who have open matters until further notice.

As always, the needs of my clients are first and foremost in my practice. I assure you that all matters will be addressed in a professional manner with the customer service you expect from Beckman Law Offices and staff. Our firm and the Kozlowski Law Group will adhere to the Iowa Rules of Professional Conduct in all matters relating to this change.
