On this day in history, in the year 1972, Shirley Chisholm became the first African American to seek a major party’s nomination for President by formally announcing her candidacy for the President of the United States. She had already served on the New York State Assembly, followed by the US House of Representatives — the first African American woman to be elected to Congress. She served there seven terms.

Patience is a necessary skill in mediation and alternative dispute resolution. Trying to pause before reacting and to give people the benefit of the doubt can go a long way. A little patience for everyone in the room helps reach settlements that meet important needs.

Today marks the beginning of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Over thirteen days, two superpowers, the US and the USSR engaged in some of the highest stakes negotiating seen on the world stage.
Emotions were high, but in the end, a peaceful resolution was found.
