DO YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO WHEN PULLED OVER BY THE POLICE?
If You Are Pulled Over in Washington
Stay calm, pull over safely, and keep your hands visible. Be polite and do not argue with the officer on the roadside.
Provide your driver’s license, vehicle registration, proof of insurance, name, and current address when lawfully requested. Washington law requires drivers to provide this basic identifying and driving information during a traffic stop.
Beyond that, you generally do not need to explain yourself or answer investigative questions. Questions such as “Do you know how fast you were going?” “Where are you coming from?” or “Have you been drinking?” can create evidence that may later be used against you.
A simple response is: “Officer, I respectfully prefer not to answer any questions.”
Do not consent to a search of yourself or your vehicle. If asked, you can calmly say: “I do not consent to any searches.”
Never physically resist or interfere with an officer, even if you believe the stop, search, or arrest is unlawful. Those issues should be challenged later by an attorney—not on the roadside.
The goal during a traffic stop is simple: be respectful, provide what the law requires, say as little as necessary, and avoid creating additional evidence.
