Chapter 13 – Rather than liquidating your assets, Chapter 13 involves reorganizing your debt into a structured repayment plan over a 3-5-year period. You would make one payment each month to a trustee, who would then disperse the appropriate funds to your creditors. Once you complete all payments that are a part of the plan, the remaining debts will be discharged.

Chapter 7 – This type of bankruptcy enables you to wipe away your debts, without the concern of past-due payments. Also known as “liquidation bankruptcy,” Chapter 7 involves a court-appointed trustee liquidating, or selling, some of your assets to repay some of your debts. After that money is dispersed to your creditors, the remaining debt will be discharged, or canceled, leaving you with no more unsecured debts to pay.
