Criminal charges have now been filed in connection with the Indiana University Phi Kappa Psi hazing investigation.

Our firm, together with Metzger Rosta, LLC, represent one of the students who was hospitalized following the alleged hazing incident.

According to the criminal charging documents, seven individuals have been charged with level 6 felony hazing, and the fraternity's former president also faces an additional level 6 felony obstruction of justice charge. The allegations describe an initiation event that resulted in two freshman pledges being hospitalized with rhabdomyolysis, a serious and potentially life-threatening medical condition.

Hazing is not a rite of passage when it places students' health and lives at risk.

We will continue advocating for our client while the criminal and civil proceedings move forward.

All criminal charges are allegations. The defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

DO YOU HAVE COLLEGE-AGE CHILDREN?

If so, now is a great time to make sure you have a few important legal documents in place before they return to campus.

Once your child turns 18, they are legally considered an adult. That means healthcare providers and financial institutions may not be able to discuss matters with you without proper authorization, even in an emergency.

• Healthcare Power of Attorney – Allows you to communicate with doctors and healthcare providers regarding your child’s medical care if needed.

• Durable Power of Attorney – Gives you the authority to handle financial and legal matters on your child’s behalf should they become incapacitated.

• Living Will – Ensures your child’s wishes regarding medical treatment are clearly documented.

While these are not situations anyone wants to think about, having these documents prepared can provide invaluable peace of mind for both you and your student.
