Mary Eliza Church Terrell was a leading African American activist who fought for racial equality and women's suffrage in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Her activism was sparked by the lynching of her friend Thomas Moss in 1892, which led her to join forces with Ida B. Wells-Barnett in anti-lynching campaigns.

Terrell's main focus was on "racial uplift," the belief that education, work, and community activism could help end racial discrimination. She co-founded the National Association of Colored Women (NACW) in 1896 and served as its president from 1896 to 1901. The NACW's motto, "Lifting as we climb," reflected Terrell's belief that individual success could elevate the entire race.

She fought against racial discrimination and segregation in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and published her autobiography, "A Colored Woman in a White World," in 1940. Terell became the first black member of the American Association of University Women in 1948 after winning an anti-discrimination lawsuit. At 86, she protested against segregation in public places, leading to a successful Supreme Court ruling in 1953 that declared segregated eating facilities unconstitutional. Terrell died in Highland Beach, Maryland in 1957.

These damages in a personal injury claim include both economic and non-economic compensatory damages.

Economic damages are often those with monetary worth, such as hospital costs or car repairs. Non-economic damages, which include things like pain and suffering caused by the collision, might be more difficult to quantify.
