Congratulations to Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her historic election as the first African and woman appointed Director-General for the World Trade Organization. We at the Nigerian Lawyers Association wish her all the best in her new role.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala is the Chair of the Board of Gavi (the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation) and the former Finance Minister of Nigeria (2003-2006, 2011-2015). She has been listed as one of the 50 Greatest World Leaders (Fortune, 2015), the Top 100 Most Influential People in the World (Time, 2014), and the Top 100 Global Thinkers (Foreign Policy, 2011, 2012).
We have no doubt that Dr. Okonko-Iweala will do exceptional work to ensure that developing countries benefit from international trade.
Congratulations are also in order for Adewale Adeyemo, Osaremen Okolo, and Funmi Olorunnipa Badejo.
Adeyemo was the first President of the Obama Foundation and is now serving as the United States Deputy Secretary of the Treasury for the Biden Administration.
Okolo, a Havard graduate and former Senior Health Policy Advisor, was appointed as Biden's COVID-19 Policy Advisor while Badejo, a lawyer and Berkeley Law College alumna, was appointed White House Counsel.
At a time of great change, the appointments of Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, Adeyemo, Okolo and Olorunnipa are significant and deeply supported by NLA.
Again, we send our congratulations and well wishes to the appointees as they progress in their new roles.
