As experienced personal injury lawyers, Ross & Hill begins every negligence case against a building owner by accessing all relevant public records involving the building and the owner of the building.

The types of accidents for which building owners are responsible are stairway defects, ceiling collapses, slip and falls due to a water leak from defective pipes and trip and fall accidents either inside the building or outside the building on a cracked, broken, uneven or raised sidewalk.

The search for records includes a careful examination of the Department of Buildings records of violations issued to the defendant building owner and its agents.

In typical trip and fall case involving a defective stairway or a broken sidewalk outside the building there may be records of prior violations or repair orders issued by one of New York City's agencies.

There also may be permits on file for subsequent repairs and future repairs of a defective condition in the building or to repair a defective sidewalk outside the building.

The existence of these records gives us potent ammunition against the building owner. It also helps us identify contractors who may also be liable for the trip and fall accident.

If you are a current client, please know that our law firm is taking all necessary steps to protect your best interests and will be continuing to work on your case even if there is a widespread shutdown.

Courthouses have been operating in a limited capacity and are closed down for in-person appearances. We have been conducting all court ordered appearances online. To the extent Courts continue with online appearances, Ross & Hill will do so as well.

We of course must take measures to protect the safety of our employees and their families. As such, some of staff will be working from home during the pandemic. All in person visits and appointments can be rescheduled to a later time.
