Bonina & Bonina is proud to share a recent $3,000,000 medical malpractice verdict secured by John Bonina in the Supreme Court, Nassau County.
Our client, a young woman, underwent surgery to remove a dermoid cyst. During the procedure, her bowel was perforated, and cyst contents were spilled into her abdominal cavity. The injury went undetected for more than two months, leaving her to endure significant pain, uncertainty, and avoidable suffering during what should have been a period of healing.
The defense argued that a bowel injury was impossible based on the patient’s positioning during surgery and claimed that, if it had occurred, it would have revealed itself within days. We refused to accept that narrative. Through exhaustive preparation, careful review of the medical evidence, and relentless advocacy in the courtroom, we demonstrated what truly happened and why it mattered.
After hearing all of the evidence, the jury found malpractice in both the failure to detect the bowel injury at the time of surgery and in the manner in which the cysts were removed. They awarded $2 million for past pain and suffering and $1 million for future pain and suffering.
For us, this case was more than a verdict. It was about standing beside a young woman who trusted her medical providers and was left with lasting harm. We worked day and night to ensure her voice was heard, her experience was validated, and those responsible were held accountable.
At Bonina & Bonina, we are driven by compassion, preparation, and an unwavering commitment to helping individuals and families navigate some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
