What a day for Team Brooklyn Defenders! Our runners hit the pavement at the 2026 this past Sunday, raising over $23,000 to support the people we represent and our advocacy work to reform the criminal, family, and immigration legal systems.

Every dollar raised goes directly toward providing clients with essential resources: phones, transportation, clothing, and help covering expensive immigration application fees. These are the things that make a meaningful difference for people navigating complex legal systems. Additionally, funds raised will support our systemic advocacy efforts and allow us to expand our community education initiatives.

We are so grateful to our incredible runners and to everyone who supported them with donations, cheers, and encouragement along the route. You can still contribute toward us keeping this work going by visiting the donation link in our bio!

Today, Brooklyn Defender Services stands with public defenders across the country for the National Day of Action for Public Defense. The right to counsel is not optional. It is a constitutional mandate guaranteed by the Sixth Amendment. Every person who cannot afford an attorney deserves a vigorous, well resourced defense. But without real government investment, the right to counsel is a guarantee in name only. We call on our government funders to back that right with the funding it demands. During Second Chance Month, we recognize the courage it takes to begin again. Reentry is more than a return, it’s a commitment to growth, stability, and possibility. This Second Chance Month, we’re proud to spotlight our BDS Re-entry Unit, whose whole‑person approach helps returning neighbors build lasting futures and strengthens our entire community.

Join us for Re-entry Rising on Wednesday, April 15 | 2–5 PM at our community office. This drop‑in event is a chance to connect, learn about reentry resources, and celebrate second chances. Stop by and show your support. (Swipe for full event details).

Team Brooklyn Defenders is hitting the pavement on April 26th for the 2026 . We’re running to raise funds that directly support the people we serve and the fight for a more just legal system. Your donation helps cover essentials like groceries, clothing, cellphones, and costly immigration application fees for the people we represent, while also supporting policy reform efforts to eliminate and reduce the harmful impacts of the criminal, family, and immigration legal systems.

Sixty-three years ago today, the U.S. Supreme Court established the legal right to counsel for people charged with a crime who cannot afford to hire an attorney, with the landmark decision, Gideon v. Wainwright.

Gideon v. Wainwright is foundational to our mission of providing representation and advocacy to people facing loss of freedom, family separation and other serious legal harms. To fulfill our mission, it takes all of us: from attorneys, social workers and paralegals to administrative professionals, investigators, and other critical roles. We believe everyone at Brooklyn Defenders is a defender.

Happy National Public Defender Day to our staff and all public defenders.

Mental health crises must be treated as health issues, not law enforcement matters.” BDS attorney Danielle Regis testified before the NYC Council on the city’s failure to connect New Yorkers in crisis to care, and what must change. Read our testimony at the link in our bio.

This winter has brought some of the coldest temperatures we’ve seen in years. You can help keep New Yorkers warm by supporting our Annual Winter Coat Drive. Give the gift of brand-new winter coats to the people we serve so they can stay safe and protected during the harshest months this season.

See the links in our bio to contribute to our wish list or give a cash donation. Thank you for being a part of this effort and for making a difference.

Stronger together in Albany. Today, BDS joined partners from The New York Foundling, The Center for Community Alternatives, and over 200 advocates to demand a legal system that better serves young New Yorkers. We are united in our call for the passage of the Youth Justice Innovation Fund, the act, and the Youth Justice & Opportunities Act. BDS remains fully committed to fighting for these essential reforms that prioritize community investment and fairness over incarceration.

The Coalition to Protect Raise The Age: Build Futures, Invest In Youth held a press conference and rally on the steps of City Hall today in response to Governor Kathy Hochul’s State of the State address to urge lawmakers to preserve the law and streamline access to funding. Assemblywoman Latrice Walker (D-55, Brooklyn) warned that “Rolling back Raise the Age, a law that has dramatically reduced youth incarceration, is a dangerous distraction,” and called for investments “in care and opportunity” for young people, “not a return to failed, punitive policies.” Please see the link in our bio for the press release about today’s rally.
