Many parents know they need a will, but they are not always sure whether a trust should also be part of their estate plan.

A will and a trust can both be helpful, but they do different things. The right choice depends on your family, your home, your children, and the type of protection you want in place.

For NYC parents, this is especially important if you own a home or have minor children.

If you have been putting this off because you were unsure where to start, our free webinar is for you.

Join Tracy Field, Esq. for Wills and Trusts for NYC Parents on Wednesday, May 20, at 7:00 PM ET.

Registration is free.

A complete estate plan is usually more than just a will.

For many NYC parents, a complete plan addresses several things at once. It covers who would care for your children, who would manage your finances if you could not, how your medical wishes would be carried out, and what happens to your home and other assets.

Most families are surprised by how much they did not know was missing until they actually sat down to think it through.

If you want a clearer picture of what real protection looks like for your family, I hope you will join me for my free webinar, Wills and Trusts for NYC Parents, on Wednesday, May 20, at 7:00 PM ET.

Registration is free.

Probate is one of those words many people hear but may not fully understand until their family is already dealing with the court process.

For New York families, probate can affect how long it takes to transfer assets, what steps the family must complete, and how much court involvement may be required. For some families, that means delays and administrative responsibilities during an already difficult time.

For parents who own a home or have minor children, understanding how probate fits into the bigger picture of protecting your family matters more than many realize.

If this is something you have questions about, I hope you will join me for my free webinar, Wills and Trusts for NYC Parents, on Wednesday, May 20, at 7:00 PM ET.

Is your child heading off to college this fall? Before the dorm shopping spree, make sure these legal essentials are on the packing list:

• Health Care Proxy plus a HIPAA release to let a trusted adult make medical decisions and receive health updates
• Durable Power of Attorney in case banking or lease issues pop up
• FERPA consent form so parents can see grades and tuition bills
• Wallet card listing allergies, prescriptions, and insurance details
• Renter’s or dorm-room insurance to protect laptops and bikes
• Backup list of key passwords stored safely at home

Handle the paperwork now, and your student can dive into campus life while you enjoy peace of mind back home.

Thinking about adding your adult child to your bank account?

It may seem like an easy way to let them pay bills or withdraw cash if you're unable, but a joint account in New York can create unexpected headaches.

• Your child gets full access and can withdraw every dollar

• Creditors and divorce courts can reach your funds
• The money bypasses your will and may disinherit other children

• Medicaid can treat joint withdrawals as gifts and delay coverage

Safer options exist. A durable power of attorney lets your child help without owning the money. A revocable living trust keeps control with you and avoids probate. A beneficiary designation transfers what is left after you pass.

A little planning now protects both your savings and your family relationships.

Estate planning can be more complicated when you have a blended family.

If you have remarried or have children from different relationships, a simple will may not adequately protect everyone you love as you intend.

A thoughtful plan helps make sure your spouse is cared for and your children are not left out. It can also help prevent future conflict among family members.

Trusts, updated beneficiary designations, and clear communication are some of the best ways to keep everyone on the same page.

A little planning now can go a long way toward keeping peace later.

Today we honor Juneteenth—June 19, 1865, the day freedom finally reached the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas.

This milestone reminds us that liberty is hard-won and must be protected for generations to come.

Let’s take this moment to remember the past, uplift one another in the present, and keep pushing toward a future where freedom truly means freedom for all. 🖤❤️💚

For dads juggling work, family, school drop‑offs, and daily routines, estate planning can easily slip off the to‑do list. Yet setting up a thoughtful estate plan brings real peace of mind when it comes to protecting your family.

Questions to consider:

• Have you named a guardian for your children?

• Do your retirement and insurance beneficiaries match your current wishes?

• Have you set up a trust to manage assets for minors?

• Do you have a Power of Attorney and a Health Care Proxy in place?

• If a child has special needs, have you explored a Special Needs Trust?

• Do you review your estate plan regularly as life changes?

Estate planning isn’t just about paperwork. It’s about caring for your loved ones now and ensuring they’re protected in the future.
